A Flag of Independence for the Three of Us
'A flag of Independence for the three of us'
Gouache and ink on paper 50" x 38"
This painting is about love and devotion and the power to support one another to fly.
Last May my daughter graduated from college and my husband, myself and my daughter all took off in different directions - me to an artist in residence, my husband to tend to projects and my daughter to explore her new freedom. My bird paintings began as a meditation on my daughter about to take flight. The birds became an incredible symbol for all of life's journeys. This painting is about the three of us finding our own wings and being able to stay together but supporting one another by going after what we need. The dandelions represent all the dreams and hopes to come. I actually started this painting last summer. Our dear Skye terrier (whom we lost almost a year ago) stood with a wet muzzle in front of the painting and shook her head and splattered the painting - I have kept as many of the water marks on the painting as possible, keeping her spirit always with us.
Swallows, Dandelions, Echinacea
Swallows-
They tend to symbolize love and devotion
Dandelions-
This humble plant is also a symbol of hope, healing, and resilience
Echinacea-
Its resilience in the wild made it a symbol of strength and healing
